These are some really great suggestions for avoiding spanking. I have found that the few times we have used spanking with our children they tend to become more aggressive and/or withdrawn. I agree that staying calm is extremely important. This can be difficult to do, but I do think it allows you to give your child an effective punishment and to think rationally. There is a great discussion about spanking at http://www.opposingviews.com/questions/is-spanking-an-acceptable-form-of-discipline Experts from both sides debate the issue, and the Center for Effective Discipline takes the anti-spanking side, making some similar recommendations you suggest here.
